Bananas thrown at Italy's first black minister

(CNN) -- Racist taunts against Italy's first black minister, Cecile Kyenge, took another ugly turn over the weekend when someone hurled bananas at her during a rally.

Kyenge's appointment as Italy's minister of integration three months ago isn't sitting well with right-wing radicals whose racial slurs and antics have overshadowed her tenure.

The banana incident is just the latest.

It took place Friday in Cervia, where Kyenge was speaking to supporters. A man popped up out of the crowd and launched two bananas toward the podium, Kyenge spokesman Cosimo Torlo said.

The bananas fell short of the stage, landing between the first and second row of spectators.

Giancarlo Mazzuca, chief editor of the daily newspaper Il Giorno, was sitting two chairs away from Kyenge.

Police haven't found the person who hurled the bananas. There will be increased security around the minister, Torlo said.

Kyenge shrugged off the episode -- as she has with the other incidents.

In a Twitter post, she called it a sad waste of food when so many people are dying of hunger.

Kyenge, who was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, moved to Italy in the 1980s to study medicine. She became an Italian citizen and is an ophthalmologist in Modena.

While her ascent to a top government position reflects the success of immigrants, it also has stoked nativism.

Ominous mannequins

Just before Kyenge arrived for Friday's rally, a group smeared blood-red paint and anti-immigrant messages onto mannequins.

"Immigration kills," read signs attached to the dummies.

The far-right political group Forza Nuova ("New Force") claimed responsibility for the mannequins.

The scene was also littered with fliers that said Italy's future growth depends on "protecting the Italian identity," according to the ANSA news agency.

Insults from other politicians

Two weeks ago, Italian Sen. Roberto Calderoli likened Kyenge to an orangutan. Calderoli, a member of the anti-immigration Northern League party, made the remarks at a political rally.

"I love animals -- bears and wolves, as everyone knows -- but when I see the pictures of Kyenge, I cannot but think of, even if I'm not saying she is one, the features of an orangutan," he was quoted as saying.

After his comments were published, Calderoli said "if I've offended her, I apologize."

"It was a joke, a comment in a joking way. There was nothing particularly against her," he said. "It was just my impression. ... It is all very well that she be a minister but in her own country. Given that this government needs to govern Italy, I hope that it is done by Italians."

Kyenge responded diplomatically, saying Calderoli "does not need to ask forgiveness to me, but he should rather reflect on the political and institutional role that he carries. It is on this that he needs to make a profound reflection also to then apologize."

She added, "Also, he must go beyond putting everything on a personal level. I think the time has come for us to study the problem of communication."

Death threats

Kyenge has also received death threats before visiting an area where the Northern League is powerful.

A local politician recently said on Facebook that Kyenge should be raped so she can understand the pain felt by victims of crime, which some politicians blame on immigrants.

She's been called a "Congolese monkey," "Zulu" and "the black anti-Italian." One Northern League official said "she seems like a great housekeeper" but "not a government minister."

Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta appealed to Northern League leader Roberto Maroni to "close this chapter right away."

Tensions over immigrants

Italy has been experiencing its highest level of unemployment in more than 20 years.

In tough times, some Italians focus their anger on immigrants, Mazzuca, the newspaper editor, told CNN.

"The economic crisis is worsening the situation," he said. "Jobs that until a few years ago wouldn't have even been considered by Italians are now becoming precious."

There have recently been more and more reports of Italians beating foreigners, particularly street vendors, Mazzuca said.

He said doesn't believe that Italians generally are racists and hopes Kyenge will be able to ease racial tensions.

"I really think that Kyenge is the right person in the right place," he said. "As an eye doctor, she is able to see in the distance."

Journalist Livia Borghese and CNN's Hada Messia contributed to this report.

Scandal's Kerry Washington Is the First Black Actress Nominated for a Lead Emmy Since 1995 (And Here's Why She Should Win)

First, a bit of history: No black actress has been nominated for a Leading Actress in a Drama Series Primetime Emmy in 18 years. That's nearly two decades.

Scandal GIF

Preposterous, we know. The last black actress to get a nom was Cicely Tyson at the 47th annual Emmy Awards in 1995, when she was nominated for NBC's Sweet Justice.

Scandal GIF

Yeah, we're sure. Also, no black actress has ever won in the category. Not ever. In 65 years of Emmy ceremonies. Not even once. Apparently the Emmys are all:

Scandal GIF

(Not that there haven't been a number of black actresses who deserved to be nominated.)

But Kerry Washington accepted that challenge.

If you aren't in the know, she's on this show called Scandal. And it's:

Kerry plays Olivia Pope, a mster of spinning PR and the top "fixer" in D.C. If you have a problem, she has a solution. And Kerry, as Olivia, basically just alternates between yelling at people in HBIC power suits:

Scandal GIF

And crying with her entire face:

Scandal GIF

OK, so she has more emotions than that. Actually maybe she has too many emotions (she's happy! She's sad! She's bangin' the president!)

Scandal GIF

And no one (NO ONE) can rock a pair of elbow-length gloves like Kerry/Olivia:

Scandal GIF

So we knew Kerry was going to get nominated. And Scandal fans (you, right?) knew she was going to get nominated. But when it came time for nominations to be announced, we didn't know if the Emmys would know too.

Scandal GIF

But again, Kerry was all:

Scandal GIF

Actually, what she said tweeted after receiving her first ever Emmy nomination was, "WOW! Im so grateful &humbled…I'll spend the rest of my life saying this and it won't ever be enough but... THANK YOU @shondarhimes XOXOXOX "

So now we wait, until the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 22.

But we know Kerry Washington is thinking:

Because:

In reality though, Queen Kerry Washington will be perfectly humble whether she wins or loses. But she should win because 1) We love Connie Britton and Elizabeth Moss and Claire Danes, but this is Kerry's year. She's amazing on Scandal (see above). And 2) It's time a deserving, black actress won. 65 years is long enough.

You know what to do Emmys.

And if she loses, well, it will be a:

Scarlett Johansson Reveals What She Reaches for When She Takes Off the Black Widow Outfit

It ain't easy being the Black Widow sometimes.

Or, more specifically, it ain't easy fitting into the Black Widow's skin-tight suit pretty much all the time!

"It's not that easy to wear the Black Widow outfit, let's be honest. You can wear the Captain outfit," Captain America: The Winter Soldier star Chris Evans told E! News at Comic-Con on Saturday.

PHOTOS: Best and worst superhero outfits

"He's tried it on, he can tell you firsthand," Scarlett Johansson chimed in, razzing her frequent Marvel Universe costar.

"But I don't know, it just didn't look as good," Evans admitted, shrugging good-naturedly.

The hunky star also agreed that he can sympathize with ScarJo's pain when it comes to sacrificing certain things in order to make weight for those unforgiving superhero getups.

Asked what the one thing is that they reach for when the training is done and the suits come off, Johanssen paused for a second.

"Hmm, I don't know...Just the buffalo sauce!" she offered.

"Just carbs, carbs," Evans added. "Gluten!"

Overall, however, the experience has obviously been worth it, not least because of the legions of new fans the actors have gained by playing such iconic characters—the love for whom is fully on display at places like Comic-Con.

"It's great, it's so exciting," Johansson said. "I never expect that kind of reaction in my life in general, so I'm always thrilled. It's always a nice surprise, right?"

"It's a reward," Evans agreed. "These are the fans that make these movies happen. Without these fans, these movies don't exist. So giving them a treat, giving them something to look forward to, it's rewarding."

And judging by what was revealed at Marvel's big presentation in Hall H, including footage featuring a first look at Robert Redford as a member of S.H.I.E.L.D., the fans are in for quite a treat.

Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige said that the Captain America sequel would be shared by Johansson and Evans "in a big way" and Joe Russo, who codirected the film with brother Anthony Russo, told Huffington Post: "There's a very strong connection in the narrative between the events of the end of Avengers that drive this film—and there's a very strong hand off to Avengers 2 at the end of this movie."
