Beauty Police: Gabrielle Union Rocks Siren Soft Curls and a Coral Lip at Venice Film Festival

Gabrielle Union Venturelli/WireImage

There is nothing prettier than a smooth blowout with soft loose curls – except when accompanied by a retro black-lined eye and on-trend coral lip.  Gabrielle Union must have made every head turn at the Miu Miu Women's Tale premiere at the 70th Venice International Film Festival yesterday when she showed off those glossy tresses.

Gabrielle's lustrous locks stole the show with her retro side part and cascading curls. But, what made this look such a standout was that her hair was so healthy and shiny, the camera flashes makes her tresses look practically illuminated.

It also didn't hurt that Ms. Union wore classically pretty makeup to complete this retro look. A black-lined eye is universally flattering regardless of eye, skin, or hair color. While the coral lip may not work on every skin tone, it looks beyond amazing on brunettes and women with olive and darker skin tones.

Get the Look: Since styling sirens are her specialty, we asked Nicole Giannini, Owner and Creative Director of Siren Salon in the San Francisco Bay Area to help us achieve Gabrielle's gorgeous look at home:

Plug in your 1 or 1.5 inch curling iron and have 7 duckbill clips ready. Apply a pea-size drop of a shine cream like Oribe Supershine Moisturizing Cream as a foundation on the ends, and then thoroughly spray hair from the roots to mid-length with a thermal protective bodybuilding spray like Oribe Maximista.

Then use a large or medium barrel round brush to do a simple blow dry, aiming for smoothness. Once hair is dry, prepare to curl!

Starting from the back of the side part, take a large section from the crown to the mid-front hairline (it would look like a triangle if you were looking down at the top of your head) and brush all of that hair forward, holding the section straight up from the forehead. Spray section with a heat-activated shine spray like Oribe Soft Lacquer Heat Styling Spray. Curl that whole section back from the face, and clip in place as a rolled pin curl to cool.

Work your way around the head in the same fashion, pivoting from the crown and curling the hair. Spraying each section of hair with Oribe Soft Lacquer Heat Styling Spray will give your curls amazing hold, memory, bounce and shine.  When you're finished curling, let the pin curls sit until they're cool.

Once curls are fully cooled, remove the clips and brush hair into place with a bristle brush.  Finish with a light anti-humidity hairspray like Oribe ImpermĂ©able Anti-Humidity Spray.

To get Gabrielle's makeup look, use a soft black eyeliner pencil like Votre Vu Le Joli Crayon in Charbon to line the upper lash line, making the line thicker as you get towards the outer corners of your eyes. If your eyes are not sensitive, then line the inner waterline of your eyes. Finish eyes by applying 2-3 coats of your favorite mascara.

To copy Gabrielle's coral pucker, first use a feather-proof skin-colored lip pencil like Bite Beauty Contour Lip Liner in Nutmeg to line and fill-in the entire lip area. (Filling in the entire lip area will ensure your lip color lasts longer and will show off maximum pigment)

Then, apply one coat of a glossy longwearing coral lipstick like STILA Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Carina. Blot with a tissue and apply a second coat to ensure longevity.

We can't wait to try this look at home for our next special event.  Who are we kidding? Like we have black-tie events in our future… We're going to rock this look at the BBQs this weekend. There is no such thing as being overdressed when it comes to hair and makeup!

Italy police arrest more than 100 in Mafia crackdown

Rome (CNN) -- More than 100 people suspected of Mafia involvement were arrested Friday in Italy as police launched two separate operations near Rome and in the country's southern Calabria region.

Police made 51 arrests in Ostia, a coastal community on the outskirts of the capital, for alleged crimes connected to the Sicilian Mafia, known as Cosa Nostra, police said in a statement.

An additional 65 people were detained in a separate operation in Calabria, where those arrested are suspected of links to the powerful 'Ndrangheta Mafia.

The operation in Ostia is one of the largest ever carried out against organized crime in the Rome area, a police news release said.

More than 500 police officers, as well as maritime and dog units, were involved, police said.

The alleged crimes under investigation in Ostia range from extortion to murder, to international drug trafficking to illegally controlling the slot machine market and business activities related to the beach, police said.

Police say their operation has delivered a "mortal blow" to the leadership of the Mafia organization in the capital.

Entire Mafia clans have been hit by the arrests, they say. Among those detained are alleged Mafia boss Carmine Fasciani.

Members of another Mafia clan, Vincenzo Triassi and his wife, have been arrested on the Spanish island of Tenerife thanks to coordination with Interpol, another police statement said.

They are being held in a Spanish jail awaiting extradition proceedings, police said.

Politicians, businessman, lawyers, doctors and even members of the prison police were arrested in the second operation, which targeted Mafia leadership around Lamezia Terme, a city in Calabria, another police news release said.

Those arrested are accused of crimes including murder, criminal association and extortion, it said.

Every year, the release said, the criminal gang made millions of euros through a system of insurance fraud, with the funds used to finance the acquisition of arms and drugs.

"We are particularly satisfied with the investigation," Rodolfo Ruperti, police chief of the city of Catanzaro, whose force carried out the Lamezia Terme operation, told CNN by telephone.

He said the inquiry shone a spotlight on the "gray area" of relations among politicians, businessmen and Mafia groups suspected of carrying out dozens of murders in past years.

Vancouver Police Issue Heroin Warning Four Days After Cory Monteith's Death

Police officials in Vancouver, Canada have issued a red alert warning to drug users in the city about the potency of heroin on the local market following a spike in overdoses, including that of tragic actor Cory Monteith.

The Glee star died in his hotel room in Vancouver on Saturday (13Jul13) and autopsy and toxicology test results have confirmed the cause of death was an accidental overdose.

Now, a day after Monteith's remains were reportedly cremated, city lawmakers have raised the alarm on a dangerously potent toxic grade of the drug.

A police statement reads: "The Abbotsford police department has observed a concerning increase in the numbers of heroin overdoses in the community."

Officers claim they had detected the presence of fentanyl, which is used to treat cancer-related pain, in recent supplies of heroin, which causes increased potency.

The statement continues, "Our front line officers have spoken with many individuals who have reported being concerned about the potency of heroin that is currently being bought, sold and used."

It is not clear whether or nor police think the batch of heroin Monteith took was laced with fentanyl.

Real-Life Comic-Con Heroes! Police Save Woman During Apparent Suicide Attempt

Comic-Con, Storm Trooper Ethan Miller/Getty Images

Comic-Con almost took a turn for the worst.

Police rushed to save a woman who was hanging from the 14th-floor balcony of a condominium building called the Mark in downtown San Diego on Thursday afternoon in an apparent suicide attempt, according to The Los Angeles Times.

"The call came in as a jumper," Officer Jim Johnson of the San Diego Police Department told the paper. "A female hanging from a balcony. There was something thrown from the balcony and she was crying. After some negotiations, she was taken into custody."

According to reports, Comic-Con onlookers initially believed the incident was some sort of promotional stunt for a movie, since the building is located above a parking lot where Universal Pictures and Playboy were gearing up to host a party for the film Kick-Ass 2.

Once it became clear that this woman was not part of any promo, people on the ground reportedly began to yell, "Don't do it! Don't jump!"

The female, whose name was not released, was taken to a county mental health facility.

Thankfully, crisis averted this time. Last year, tragedy struck Comic-Con when a Twilight fan died in a car accident.

San Diego Police Department told E! News at the time, "A 53-year-old white female was killed in a pedestrian vs. vehicle fatality collision at the intersection 5th Ave. and Harbor Drive.

"The preliminary investigation reveals that the woman was running across Harbor Drive, where she nearly ran into the path of a westbound vehicle. She tried to stop but tripped and fell into the car. She received massive head trauma."

Andra Brown from SDPD explained, "The call came in at 9:22 am and she was pronounced dead at 9:51 am at the hospital."
